How to add Warmth

Now that the temperature has dropped significantly and Winter is drawing ever nearer, the urge increases to add warth and comfort to our homes. After all, we will be spending more time indoors as we take shelter from the cold, wet, windy conditions outside.

There are several ways to add a sense of warmth to your interior, without having to turn the heating up: Here are our top five tips:

1. Use colours from the warmer side of the colour wheel, such as red (wine, ruby, crimson, claret), orange (including terracottas, rust tones), and yellow (think antique gold, honey and sunshine), rather than cooler tones such as whites, cool greys and blues.

The cushions on the left are cooler colours, those on the right are warmer tones.

2. Touchable textures that offer comfort such as velvets and chenilles add a sense of cosiness. Go for highly textured fabrics but avoid or at least limit shiny, glossy and hard textures.

The cushion on the left, Glam Red is coller and less inviting than the cushion on the right, Lola Red.

3. Interline your curtains. Interlining is a thick, blanket like layer that is stitched inbetween your curtain fabric and lining. This thick layer enhances the curtains, making them appear thicker and heavier with fuller, rounded pleats. The blankety layer also helps to keep drafts out and heat in.

4. Add layers of warmth with plenty of cushions and throws or blankets. Anything that looks cosy and inviting will feel warmer and more homely. Carpets and rugs soften hard floors adding warmth and a greater snuggle factor. Tiled or wooden floors can be unwelcoming and cooling in the darker, colder months.

5. The ultimate solution is to light a real fire, gas fire or wood burners. Nothing else can add so much warmth, character and cosiness to a home.
