Our Top Ten New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home

Take the inspiration and opportunity the New Year brings to make a difference to your home, with our top ten resolutions.

1. Check the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Before we move onto the less essential suggestions for 2018, let’s get serious and remind ourselves of the importance of this 5 minute task. It’s easy to put off but could make all the difference in the event of a fire.

2. Tackle that unruly pile of shoes and boots.

Take the opportunity to go through the inevitable collection of shoes and boots that builds up around your front door causing a trip hazard. Donate anything unwanted to your local charity shop. Put your summer sandals and flip-flops away until the warmer months. A shoe rack or tidy will make a world of difference and create a more streamlined, welcoming entrance.

3. Tidy up before you go to bed.

A quick loading of mugs and glasses into the dishwasher, plumping of cushions and general tidy up will only take a few minutes but will put a spring in your step the next morning.

4. Spruce up tired looking cushions

There’s no need to replace the whole cushion, which can be costly: To rejuvenate a sad looking cushion give your cushion covers a wash to freshen them up. The feather or fiber inserts in your cushions will become lumpy and flat over time. Click here to order replacement pads for your favourite cushions: feather and fibre pads

5. Have your carpets cleaned.

Replacing old carpets with new can be costly. If you rent a steam cleaner or hire a professional, your home will be given an instant clean and fresh lift.

6. Choose a Family DIY Project.

Entice your children away from their smart phones with a group home décor project. Simple but fun projects such as painting dining room chairs or making cushions might prove inspiring. Letting them choose paint colours and fabrics will engage their interests and help them to become more invested in keeping your home looking good.

7. Tackle Your In-Tray.

Post can pile up on kitchen or hallway surfaces and before long becomes a towering to-do list! Try to keep your post in one place and set aside half an hour at the end of each week to go through the stack and take action or file away. You’ll be amazed at how much tidier your house can seem without that ominous stack of paper.

8. Manage Your Laundry.

If your children are anything like mine there will be a steadily multiplying mass of dirty laundry adorning their bedroom floor! Hanging a laundry bag on the door of each bedroom might inspire them to at least keep their floors clear of washing. Collect the bag at the end of each week to wash, or even better, teach them how to do their own washing. We love this idea found in Woman's Weekly: Fish Laundry Bags

9. Treat Yourself.

If you’re planning to spend a lot of time and energy keeping your home looking clean and smart this year, treat yourself to some fresh flowers. Altenatively, for a longer lasting, budget-friendly alternative, paper flowers can add a friendly touch of colour.

10. Replace your curtains!

Our list would not be complete without the suggestion that you take a look at your curtains and think about replacing them. Perhaps replace curtains with roman blinds for a sleeker, more contemporary look: Roman Blinds. Or, alternatively, take advantage of our January sale to splash out on those curtains you’ve been admiring: Made to Measure Curtains. Simply replacing older net curtains with a newer, whiter set can really freshen up your home: Net Curtains.

We hope you've found some inspiration in our Top Ten but we'd love to hear your tips for reviving your home this year, so please share below. We'll leave you with our best wishes for a happy and healthy 2018.
